2008 LAKE TAHOE TOUR

July 11, 12 & 13th

The 2008 Bike Hikers Tahoe Tour is shaping up to be a real exciting weekend.

The tour will start on Friday July 11th with a short local ride (approx 21 miles with 1000 ft of climbing) near South Lake Tahoe. The route will be a good warm-up ride with great local views and vistas.

Saturdays ride will be a 72 mile ride around Lake Tahoe. We will start at the hotel in South Shore and ride clockwise around the lake. The climb at Emerald Bay is broken up into three parts. A 1.25 mile climb followed by a ½ mile descent. Then another .9 mile climb, a little steeper this time, followed by a short flat spot near the parking and vista point. We will stop here to take in the million dollar view before we start the final .9 mile climb to the top. After that we will enjoy several miles of long downhill twists and turns with an occasional roller thrown in to remind us that we are in the Sierras. A short break for fluids and snacks (and to re-group) at Homewood and then on to Kings Beach where we will enjoy a nice lunch waiting for us at the waters edge. After lunch we will move on past Incline Village and then face the long but not so steep climb around the east side of the lake to Spooner Summit at the junction of Highway 28 & Highway 50. From here the fun will begin with a long downhill with great views and awesome speeds back to the hotel.

Saturday option: Roger Braxton has offered to lead a Mountain Bike ride. The route has not been selected yet but probably the Flume Trail. This is a beautiful ride from Spooner Lake up the trail past Marlette Lake across Tunnel Creek and then a single track descent down to Highway 28. This ride is 13.2 miles long and has 1,220 feet of elevation. It is rated for intermediate riders and takes 2 to 4 hours.

Sundays ride will be another short ride with lots of photo opportunities and more impressive views. We should be back to the hotel in time to clean up and shower before we check out and hit the road for home.
