The tour offers cycling, shopping, site-seeing, spectacular scenery and socializing. This year, we plan to offer hiking and cycling options on Friday morning to extend the weekend and really enjoy the Monterey Bay.
Description:
Thursday – We’ll have a social gathering for those who arrive Thursday. Dinner is optional at the Lodge or you can venture out to local restaurants in Pacific Grove, Monterey or Carmel.
Friday Morning – There will be several options for your pleasure, including a hike, a bike ride; planned by your tour leaders, or take advantage of the wonderful attractions in the area, including the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row in Monterey, Steinbeck Museum in Salinas (absolutely worthwhile) including Historic Salinas, and Carmel-by-the-Sea for restaurants, shops and sights. Also, visit Carmel Valley for some of the world’s finest wineries. The Chateau Julien offers tours, great hospitality, and superb wine. For total relaxation, take a walk along the shore and feel the ocean mist in your face and the sand between your toes.
Friday Afternoon – The official tour kick-off and social gathering will start at 3:00 PM in the pool area at the Lodge. Appetizers and soft drinks will be provided, but feel free to bring the adult beverage of your choice. Dinner is optional at the Lodge or on your own.
Saturday Morning - we will ride along the 17-Mile Drive, passing the crown jewel of the golf world Pebble Beach, and the centuries-old Lone Cypress; here’s where we normally stop for a group photo. There’s rarely any traffic at 9:00 AM, so you can take time to stop along the way before arriving into Carmel-by-the-Sea. We will stop for coffee and their fabulous pastries, so bring a bike lock along to enjoy Carmel’s Annual Halloween Parade down Ocean Avenue at 11:00 AM, which is ghoulish fun to watch. Some Bike Hikers are known to dress in colorful costumes, which is optional during the ride. The roundtrip distance is approximately 30 miles; or you can choose to go one-way and make arrangements with someone for the transportation back. Also, there’s an optional 10 miles to Point Lobos for cycling, hiking and picnicking. Last year, a group picked up lunch before entering the park, and enjoyed an afternoon picnic and hike (no fee to enter the State Park by bike).
Saturday Afternoon – We’ll gather for some socializing around 3:00 PM, back at the Lodge poolside; appetizers and sodas will be provided. Dinner is optional at the Lodge, on your own, or with a group at a special restaurant (more details later).
Sunday Morning – 8:00 AM club ride north to Marina, along the beautiful Bay Coast and through the dunes on a paved bike trail, similar to the American River Bike Trail. The roundtrip distance is around 30 miles. Our destination is a coffee shop in Marina for complimentary donuts and coffee (courtesy of our club). The early start enables sufficient time to ride and return to check-out by Noon.
